NASA Invites Students to Design a Robot Digger Months

Aviation and Space agency of the United States (National Aeronautics and Space Administration/NASA) not only involves adults or professional in carrying out its mission to the moon.

NASA recently held a contest Lunabotics Junior invites students K-12 (elementary to high school) in the United States to design (but not create) robots digger of the Month.

They have to imagine a robot compact-sized 3.5 x 2 x 2 feet (106,68 x 60,96 x 60,96 cm) that can dig and move the regolith months while facing the challenges (adhesiveness) of land.

Reported by Engadget, Monday (25/10/2021), in this competition, the students involved have until January 25, 2022 to submit an image of a robot and a summary of the way of operation.

The two winners for the category of K-5 and 6-12, each had the opportunity to attend virtual classes with the Director of the Kennedy Space Center, Janet Petro.

While the four finalists in each group had the opportunity to attend virtual sessions with experts from NASA.

Then, 10 semi-finalists will get a prize package that is not specified. NASA will announce the semi-finalists on March 8, a finalist on 22 March, and the winner on 29 March 2022.

Previously, NASA launched the unmanned aircraft (space probe) Lucy successfully from Cape Canaveral in Florida, Saturday, October 16, 2021 local time.

Space probe Lucy will carry out the mission of the 12 year to the study of asteroids near Jupiter, Trojan. Thus quoted from The Verge, Sunday (17/10/2021).

Further, the space probe Lucy is a spacecraft unmanned, which was launched aboard a rocket, United Launch Alliance Atlas V. Lucy sends a signal first to the Earth from the antenna to the Deep Space Network for NASA.

Scientists believe the asteroid Trojan yeng orbiting the Sun along the same line with Jupiter may have clues about the formation of the solar system. Lucy becomes a spacecraft mission first single NASA to explore so many asteroids are different.

Naming Lucy derived from the framework of human fossils found in Ethiopia in 1974. Fossil skeletons of Lucy gives important insights about the evolution of man.

Lucy’s name is taken from the Beatles song ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’ playing on the location of the discovery of fossils.

NASA called, space probes Lucy will provide insight into the evolution of the solar system and the planet, such as how the fossil Lucy give you the knowledge about the human evolution.

Space probe Lucy are in the trajectory of the complex which will include the three orders of the trip back to Earth with the aid of gravity.

First, Lucy orbiting the Sun and back to Earth in the next year to get help boost gravity.

This will accelerate and steer the trajectory of the aircraft beyond the orbit of Mars, while Lucy is back again to Earth to get a boost of gravity in 2024.

This moment will help push Lucy towards the asteroid Donaldjohanson in 2025. Next Lucy is going towards the asteroid Trojan and is expected to arrive in 2027.

Finally, after four times a fly-by of targeted, Lucy will return to earth to get help boost gravity third in 2031 pushed him towards the Trojan, arrived around 2033.

Lucy has been designed since 2014. “We started working on the concept of the mission of the Lucy at the beginning of 2014, so the launch of this has long been done,” said Hal Levison, principal investigator Lucy at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in a statement.

Levison said, still need a few years before Lucy up to the asteroid Trojan first.

“But this stuff worth the wait with all the effort because of the scientific value of which is very large. They are like diamonds in the sky,” he said.
