WhatsApp instant messaging service has a feature that displays last seen and online status. Both features allow others to see when the user last opened the WhatsApp application and when the user was currently opening the application. The latest news, WhatsApp overhauled the last seen feature policy in its application. WhatsApp will reportedly hide users’ last seen and online status from strangers by default.
The foreigner in question is a person who is not registered in the user’s cell phone contact or a person who has never sent a message with the user. This last seen and online status reshuffle was revealed from a screenshot of an e-mail from WhatsApp Support, which was shared by one of the netizens on Twitter.
In the e-mail, WhatsApp Support revealed that the last seen feature overhaul was aimed at increasing the privacy and security of WhatsApp users. “We make it difficult for people you don’t know and haven’t sent to see your last seen and online status,” wrote WhatsApp Support. This overhaul only applies to “strangers”, not to friends, family, colleagues, or other people who are already registered in the user’s cell phone contacts or have sent messages before.
Before being overhauled, the last seen status was by default visible to everyone (everybody). To hide it, the user must manually change the last seen setting, from the everyone option (everybody) to the my contact option (only visible to my contacts) or nobody (cannot be seen by anyone). The last seen status setting can be changed via “Settings” > “Account” > “Privacy” > “Last seen”.

WhatsApp is said to be including the “My contacts except” option in the last seen settings. This new option allows users to choose which contacts on their phone cannot see their last seen WhatsApp status. This option complements the current three last seen settings, namely last seen can be seen by everyone (everybody), can only be seen by contacts (my contacts), and no one (nobody).
