Instagram is often a breeding ground for fake accounts and spam accounts. In order to suppress the existence of the account, Instagram is known to ask users to record selfie videos for verification. The existence of this feature was revealed by a well-known social media consultant, Matt Navarra through his Twitter account with the handle @MattNavarra. In the screenshot shared by Navarra, it can be seen that Instagram is asking users to take short selfie videos from different directions. “This will help us confirm that you are a real person and confirm your identity,” reads the description.
On the bottom side, there is an additional caption that says that Instagram will never see the selfie video and will delete it in 30 days. Meta, as the parent of Instagram, also claims that it will not use facial recognition or collect biometric data from this feature.
This feature is starting to roll out for new Istagram accounts. While the old account is said to have not seen the verification feature using this selfie video. However, one well-known food writer from New York, Bettina Makalintal, admitted that she already got this feature. Through his personal twitter, @bettinamak, he admitted that he was surprised when Instagram asked him to take a selfie video when he wanted to log in. It is not told whether he logged in to the old or new account.
Actually, the verification feature using this selfie video has been developed by Instagram long ago. This feature was rolled out by Instagram in August last year, but was quickly withdrawn again due to a technical problem that was not detailed further.
