Notepad

Notepad or more fully Microsoft Notepad is a text editor for creating simple text files. Microsoft Notepad has been included in all versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system starting with Microsoft Windows 1.0 in 1985. This means that when you install Microsoft Windows or purchase a computer with Microsoft Windows installed, the Notepad application is automatically installed on it.

The main function or use of Notepad is to view or edit text files (text files). Notepad only supports basic formatting so it can’t do complex formatting like Microsoft Word. Notepad also doesn’t support image insertion. When running this application, you will only find very basic functions or commands for manipulating text.

In Notepad, you are allowed to use certain types of fonts (font settings) when creating text files. The thing to remember here is that the use of a particular font only affects how the text is and is printed, but has no effect on how files are stored on or on other storage media.

Notepad allows you to create or open documents in several different formats such as ANSI, Unicode, big-endian Unicode or UTF-8. The format allows you to work with files that use different characters. Notepad saves files with the .txt extension and by default, uses the ANSI text format.

In Microsoft Windows, a file is considered a text file if it has a .txt extension. However, many extensions or suffixes are used for text files with more specific purposes, such as computer programming. For example, the source code of the Java program shown below is also a text file that uses the .java extension.

To write complex program code, you can’t just use Notepad. You will need to write code in a tool that has an integrated development environment (IDE) or use a text editor capable of syntax highlighting or indentation such as Notepad++. For simple program code, you can use Notepad.

On the release of the Windows 10 operating system, Microsoft plans to add Notepad to the Microsoft Store to see ratings and reviews from users. For those of you who are already using the Windows 10 operating system, you can open or run the Notepad application via the Start button > Windows Accessories.
