In general, the character of the Sundanese people is cheerful, friendly (soméah, as in the philosophy of soméah hadé ka sémah), smiling, gentle, and very respectful of parents. That is a mirror of Sundanese culture.

  1. Cultural ethos

Sundanese culture is one of the oldest cultures in the archipelago. The ideal Sundanese culture is then often associated with the culture of the Sunda Kingdom. There are several teachings in Sundanese culture about the path to the virtue of life. The Sundanese ethos and character include:

  • Cageur, which means healthy, which is physically and mentally healthy, healthy in thought, healthy and has a stand, morally healthy, healthy in work and speech.[1]
  • Bageur, it means being kind to others, giving a lot of help in the form of thoughts, good morals and material, not being stingy with others, not being emotional at heart, helpful and sincere in carrying out and practicing not just reading or speaking.
  • Bener means true or not lying, not carelessly in carrying out work, mandates, straight in carrying out religion, leading well, and not destroying nature.[1]
  • Singer, which means introspective, thorough in work, putting others before oneself, respecting the opinions of others, full of love, not angry when criticized but accepted with grace.[1]
  • Smart, meaning intelligent, understands religious knowledge to the bottom, can adapt to others, can solve problems wisely, and do not have bad thoughts about others.

2. Cultural values

Sundanese culture has certain characteristics that distinguish it from other cultures. In general, the Sundanese people are known as a gentle, religious, and very spiritual society. This tendency is seen as in the proverbs of penance, penance and nurturing; love each other (prioritize compassion), perfect each other or improve themselves (through education and knowledge sharing), and protect each other (maintain each other’s safety). In addition, Sundanese also has a number of other values such as politeness, humility towards others, respect for elders, and compassion for the smaller ones. In Sundanese culture, the magical balance is maintained by performing traditional ceremonies, while the social balance of the Sundanese people does mutual cooperation to maintain it.

3. Art

Sundanese culture has many arts, including the art of Sisingaan, Sundanese dances, wayang golek, children’s games, and musical instruments and traditional Sundanese music which are usually played at art performances.

Sisingaan is a Sundanese art that features 2–4 stuffed lions carried by the players while dancing. Sisingaan is often used in certain events, such as circumcisions. Wayang golek are wooden puppets that are played based on certain characters in a wayang story. Puppets are played by a puppeteer who controls various characters and the voices of the characters being played. Jaipongan is the development and root of classical dance. Tap Tilu Dance, as the name implies Tap Tilu dance comes from the name of an instrument or traditional musical instrument called a 3 piece tap.

Typical Sundanese musical instruments, namely, angklung, degung, rampak kendang, flute, Kacapi, goong, calung, tarawangsa, toleat, tarompét are musical instruments made of bamboo which are uniquely pleasing to the ear. Angklung has also become one of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. Rampak kendang are several drums (traditional Sundanese musical instruments) that are played together simultaneously. Seni Reak (kuda lumping) is a performance consisting of four rhythmic musical instruments shaped like a drum made of wood and a mat that is beaten made of cowhide, which are called dogs of various sizes, namely Tilingtit (small size), Tung (bigger than Tilingtit), Brung (bigger than Tung), Badoblag (bigger than Brung).

Coupled with a rhythmic musical instrument called the drum which is carried by two people and added by a melodic musical instrument in the form of a tarompet made of wood that sings Sundanese music to dangdut music which is sometimes accompanied by a sinden. This reactive art displays the attraction of the transcendence of the metaphysical world into the profane world called (a vow or so, an anniversary) and the attraction of Bangbarogan. Bangbarongan is a costume used by people who are taking vows, made of wood in the shape of a large head with fangs and red in color plus a burlap sack to cover the wearer’s body. This art is found in the East Bandung area from Ujung Berung sub-district, Cibiru to Sumedang Regency.
