In order to welcome World Angklung Day and preserve Indonesia’s cultural heritage and make angklung global, Dharma Pertiwi together with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Ministry of Trade, OASE of the Working Cabinet, Dekranas, and LaDara held the “Angklung Globally” activity, with the theme “Preserve, Promote, and Generate Global Angklung”, on November 8, 2021 at the Satriamandala Museum, Jakarta. This event was also broadcast live streaming through the Dharma Pertiwi YouTube channel.

First Lady, Iriana Joko Widodo in her speech as well as opening and inaugurating this event said that this year’s World Angklung Day commemoration was used as a momentum to generate love and concern for angklung and invites to play angklung again at various events in Indonesia and in various parts of the world.

“Hopefully the beauty of the sound of the angklung will make Indonesia more known throughout the world, hopefully Indonesian culture will also be more sustainable, develop, and more advanced,” said Iriana, closing her speech.

General Chairperson of Dharma Pertiwi, Nanny Hadi Tjahjanto, said that currently the progress and development of angklung is not balanced with young people, the lack of regeneration of angklung artists means that their number is becoming less and less and is dominated by the elderly. to the younger generation and invites to continue to work and preserve the work of this nation.

The event was also filled with interactive dialogue between the Education and Culture Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in the United States, Prof. Popy Rufaidah, Ph.D., Ambassador / Deputy Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Indonesia to UNESCO, Prof. Ismunandar, Director General of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology, Dr. Hilmar Farid, who was present virtually via zoom with the Chairman of Saung Angklung Mang Udjo, Taufik Udjo.

On this occasion, Kang Udjo expressed his gratitude to Popy, Ismunandar and Hilmar as well as all those who gave attention and appreciation to Saung Angklung in particular and the art of angklung in general so that several angklung ecosystems came back to life.

The event was also enlivened by the attraction of playing angklung together which was attended by more than 10,000 participants spread across five continents around the world online and offline guided by Teh Amel who is the third generation of Saung Angklung Udjo and daughter of Kang Udjo and also Conductor & Music Director of the House of Angklung Washington DC, Tricia Sumarijanto.

The attraction managed to break the MURI world record which was delivered virtually by the Founder of MURI, Prof. Dr. (H.C.). K.P. Jaya Suprana. According to Jaya, this is a record that inflames the spirit of national pride that we should appreciate.
