Sintren Dance History

Sintren dance is a traditional Cirebon dance that also developed in the coastal areas of West Java and Central Java. That said, this dance has a magical element in it.

This dance begins with the story of Sulandono, the son of Ki Bahurekso, the Regent of Kendal, from his marriage to Dewi Rantamsari the Goddess Lanjar.

Raden Sulandono fell in love with Dewi Sulasih, a princess from Kalisalak Village. However, his love story did not get the blessing of his father, Ki Bahurekso. Finally, Raden Sulandono went to be imprisoned, while Sulasih became a dancer.

On the way, they used to hold meetings in a magical way. The meeting between Raden Sulandono and Sulasih was apparently arranged by Dewi Rantamsari, Raden Sulandono’s mother by inserting the spirit of an angel into Sulasih’s body. At that time, Raden Sulandono who was imprisoned was called to meet Sulasih.

Based on the story, every Sintren dance performance always involves the ritual of the handler inserting the spirit of an angel into the dancer’s body. However, the dancer must be in a state of purity.

The Meaning and Philosophy of Sintren Dance

The meaning of the Sintren dance itself is about life. The Sultan of Cirebon Kasepuhan named PRA Arief Natadiningrat said that the Sintren dance does not have mystical elements in it, instead this dance has a meaning about humans who often forget themselves when they have a lot of wealth.

PRA Arief Natadiningrat said the money thrown at the dancers was interpreted as worldly wealth and lust. When a dancer falls due to being hit by money, it is a manifestation as a human being who often forgets himself when he has become a great person.

Sintren Dance Movement

No special choreography was created for the Sintren movement because it was danced by the spirit of an angel who possessed the dancer’s body. Therefore, it is not uncommon for the movements to be danced to be monotonous or repetitive. The movement in the sintren dance is divided into 3 stages, namely:

1. Beginning of Show

At the beginning of the Sintren show or also known as “Down Sintren”. At this stage there are several very dominant movements such as worship, lembehan, handshake, geol buttocks, kosoki, belulukan, ngoyok, and also curved.

2. The Core of the Show

The balangan and temohan rituals are at the core of the Sintren performance. At the core of the show, there are several movements when the dancers have come out of the chicken cage, such as ringing colak, lembehan together, murub mubyar, and gebyar.

3. End of Show

The end of the Sintren performance was marked by a scene where the dancers issued nyiru to put down their voluntary saweran money from the audience. The movement at the end of the show which is usually done repeatedly is the unified movement and the withered cry.

Sintren Dance Floor Pattern

Because the Sintren dance is a dance that is danced by the spirit of an angel, the pattern of the dance floor that forms the basis of the dance movement is also very simple, namely the floor pattern of a straight line following the strains of the gending music being played.
