Krita is a free and open source software for raster graphics editor, designed primarily for drawing, painting, and animation. Krita has a simple interface, high-level OpenGL canvas acceleration, color management, advanced brushes, non-destructive layers and masks, layer group management, vector support and switchable profile customization. Krita can run on Linux, Microsoft Windows, and macOS. The name “Krita” has multi-cultural references. In Swedish, krita means “crayon” and rita means “draw”. In the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, the name “Krita” is used in contexts where it can be translated as “perfect”.[2] The early development of the Krita project can be traced back to 1998 when Matthias Ettrich, founder of KDE demonstrated a Qt GUI hack for GIMP at the Linux Congress. The idea of building a Qt-based image editor then moved on to KImage, which is maintained by Michael Koch, as part of the KOffice suite. In 1999, Matthias Elter proposed the idea of building software using Corba and ImageMagick. In order to avoid the trademarks already on the market, the project underwent many name changes: KImageShop, Crayon, until finally settling under the name “Krita” in 2002. The first public version of Krita was released alongside KOffice 1.4 in 2004. between 2004 and 2009, Krita has been developed as general image manipulation software such as Photoshop and GIMP. Changes in direction began to occur in this project. In 2009 this project has a new goal, namely to become a software for drawing such as Corel Painter and SAI. Since then, this project has started to make various efforts to get funding, including by participating in the Google Summer of Code. As a result, development can run faster and result in better performance and stability. The Krita Foundation was established in 2013 to provide support for the development of Krita. Then collaborated with Intel to create Krita Sketch as a marketing campaign and Krita Studio with KO GmbH as a commercial version that supports film and VFX studios. The Kickstarter campaign has been used to raise funds for Krita’s development since 2014.
