January 22, 1998: Rupiah exchange rate penetrated 17,000,- per US dollar
After decades of being lulled by such astonishing growth, in 1998 the Indonesian economy experienced a severe contraction. The crisis quickly spread to all sectors. Dozens, even hundreds of companies, ranging from small scale to conglomerates, collapsed. More than 70 percent of companies listed on the capital market are also insolvent or bankrupt notes. The sectors that were hardest hit were the construction, manufacturing and banking sectors, resulting in a large wave of layoffs.
Graphic design companies were not spared from this crisis, one by one they were closed because most of their clients came from the banking, construction and manufacturing sectors. Only small studios (consisting of two or three people) survived, because the overhead was also small, large studios that were able to survive were forced to drastically cut the number of staff.
