Windows 11 is again reported to have problems. The latest report states that the performance of the NVMe type SSD runs slower when installed on a PC with the latest operating system from Microsoft. This issue came to light from a number of threads on the online discussion forum Reddit and on the Microsoft support forum. Please note, this report about the slow SSD in Windows 11 has appeared when Windows 11 was still a preview. As quoted by KompasTekno from XDA-Developer, Friday (9/12/2021), a Reddit user with ID MahtiDruidi reported that his NVMe SSD runs slower on systems with Windows 11 OS.
The report is reinforced by data from the CrystalDiskMark SSD and AS-SSD benchmark results, where there is a significant speed difference on the same brand of NVMe SSD (Samsung 980 Pro NVMe 1TB), on different operating systems (Windows 10 and Windows 11). On Windows 10, using the AS-SSD benchmark, the score obtained is 5127. Meanwhile, when the SSD was tested on Windows 11, the score was lower, namely 4378. A higher benchmark score indicates better performance. The striking difference in benchmark scores comes in particular from the random data write performance of the NVMe SSD. Data writing on the NVMe SSD in Windows 10 is faster than on Windows 11.
It’s not the SSD that’s the problem
Until now, there has been no official clarification from Microsoft. Users are still guessing the cause of the slow performance of NVMe SSDs in Windows 11. Apart from users on Reddit, the same report also appeared on the Microsoft support forum. Users with ID PleasedPen25317 tested the performance of NVMe SSDs in a different way. He tried to test the performance of 2 NVMe SSDs of the same brand (Samsung 980 Pro NVMe 2TB), on Windows 11, on the same device. However, one SSD is used as a place to install Windows 11, while the other is used as secondary storage.
In testing, he used the CrystalDiskMark benchmark. The results are quite surprising. On the SSD used for the Windows 11 installation, performance is slower.
However, the SSD used for secondary storage actually runs stably according to its capabilities. The report from PleasedPen25317 seems to confirm that the problem is not in the SSD, but in the operating system. This is because it was previously suspected that the virtualization-based security (VBS) system on the SSD would affect the read/write speed of the NVMe SSD. The report was also refuted by the results of testing the same SSD on two different Windows OS, where the results were also different. So, there really is no valid explanation, why Windows 11 makes SSD NVMe performance so slow.
Meanwhile, there are also reports that the Windows 11 build 22000,348 update fixes this SSD performance issue. However, even that is still far from the capabilities of SSDs running on Windows 10. A Microsoft technician once made a confession on a Reddit forum that the Windows 11 operating system does affect SSD performance. Unfortunately, this problem still appears until the final version is released.
