Since 2000 years ago, humans have known that the earth is round. From the time of calculating the angle of the sun, the discovery of the law of gravity, to photographic evidence, it has been shown that the earth is shaped like a meatball.
But, from ancient times even until now, there are those who say that the earth is not round, but flat. Hmm, okay, that’s okay even though we know the earth is round, we can try to imagine, if the earth was really flat, what would happen?
Before we get to the answer, we must understand what the flat earth really looks like. Okay, so he said, the earth is shaped like a saucer moving upwards at a constant speed where the sun and moon revolve over the earth. Well, if this happens, then in the flat earth world, gravity, solar and lunar eclipses, and even the heliocentric theory, do not apply. But still, if the earth was flat, what would happen?
The answer is, many things! Unlike the spherical earth, the shape of the flat earth makes gravity a fiction. Because of its attractiveness to the center of gravity, an object the size of the earth should be spherical in shape. Imagine this is like a toy candle that we press with two hands, surely the candle will become round. Well, if there was no gravity, objects would float, the atmosphere would no longer cover the earth, the sky would be dark, there would be no weather, no oxygen, sunlight would strike, and finally there would be no life on earth. So pathetic.
But, okay, if there was still gravity, the effect would be that people living on the edge of the earth would be in trouble. As you move closer to the edge, the attraction of gravity will bring objects to the center of the earth. In effect, people in the middle of the earth will feel fine, but getting to the edge, it feels like climbing to the top of a mountain. The buildings will tilt towards the center of the earth, as will plants, water, and even if we play ball, the ball will be very difficult to kick. These two things are just some of the many differences that would occur if the earth was flat, such as no more time zones, the stars in the sky would look the same, no changing seasons, and many other things.
But, from there, now that we know, the shape of the flat earth is difficult to prove. Speaking of the shape of the earth, actually from ancient times the idea was more than flat. There was a time when we thought that the earth was like this, like this, even like this. How come?
Basically, we — humans — are explorers, always wanting to know answers about the universe. So since humans began to observe the movement of the stars, various versions of stories have emerged, both about the earth that we stand on and the universe above our heads. Every civilization has its own version, until we finally find the key to finding answers, and it’s called science! Science is a cross-generational effort, for us humans to understand why things happen. What caused it? How come? It is through this science that our versions of the story are tested, through experiment and observation. Everyone can test it, open our minds.
Defend the stories that passed the test, discard the ones that didn’t have much evidence. Follow the evidence wherever it goes. Although sometimes it goes against what we believe and is uncomfortable to hear. And lastly, always question everything. Find out. But more importantly, look for the evidence.
Through science, we admit that we don’t know. And from there, we find out and learn. From there, we slowly find answers. We can challenge the spherical shape of the earth, if we are able to prove to the world, scientifically that the shape of the earth is flat. For sure, it would shock the world. But for the most part, there is only a version of the story, which provides unscientific, unquestionable evidence. That is the opposite of the essence of science, we just believe it, don’t try to prove it.
So, with that condition, we can conclude that the earth is not flat. In the end, Science can only accept facts that are proven through experiments and on the other hand reject what is not proven true. Just like unicorns, yeti, and lochness monsters, the flat earth is still an assumption that so far has not been proven.
