BATAK TRADITION

  • Aruu Ears

The aruu ear tradition is also known as the long ear tradition. This tradition basically lengthens a woman’s ears to the chest by using earrings called Belaong.

These earrings are usually large, shaped like a bracelet and made of copper. This tradition is carried out by Dayak women to conform to beauty standards.

There are two types of earrings used, namely hisang semhaa and hisang kavaat. Hisang semha is placed around the earlobe, while the hidang kavaat is worn around the earlobe.

This tradition is only carried out by a few Dayak tribes in the interior, such as the Punan Dayak, Kelabit Dayak, Taman Dayak, Penan Dayak, and Kenyah Dayak.

  • Kwangkey

Kwangkey or Kuangkay is a traditional death ceremony for the Benuaq Dayak tribe in the interior of East Kalimantan. Kwangkey comes from the words ke and angkey. Ke means to do or carry out and angkey means carcass. So, Kwangkey can be interpreted as removing the carcass. More specifically, that is to escape from all grief and end the mourning period.

This traditional ceremony is carried out with the intention of honoring and glorifying the spirits of the ancestors who have died. After the implementation of this traditional ceremony, it is hoped that the spirits will find happiness and a better place.

  • Tutang

Tutangs are also referred to as tattoos. The Dayak people believe that tattoos are symbols of various strengths, relationships with God, the journey of life, and so on.

Before doing the tattoo procession, one must undergo certain rituals. Uniquely, this tradition can be done by both men and women.

In fact, tattoos can also be used as a marker of a person’s maturity. For men, an eggplant flower tattoo is a sign of maturity, while for women, a tedak kassa tattoo is a sign of it.

The Dayak tribe in East Kalimantan has a distinctive dance called the Gantar Dance. This dance is a social dance of the Dayak Benuaq and Tunjung tribes in West Kutai Regency. The function of this dance is also as a welcome dance for the heroes from the battlefield. Gantar dance is divided into three types, namely Gantar Rayat, Gantar Busai, and Gantar Senak and Kusak.

  • Manajah Antang

Manajah Antang can be understood as hunting enemies. In this ceremony, the elders of the Dayak tribe will communicate with the spirits of their ancestors through the antang birds.

This is done to find the whereabouts of the enemy before the war occurs. Besides, nowadays, manajah is used to search for a clue.

  • Kaharingan

The Dayak tribe is known to adhere to the Kaharingan belief. The Kaharingan religion has merged into the Hindu religious group so that it gets the title Hindu Kaharingan religion. However, there is also a small part of the Dayak community who are now converting their religion from the Kaharingan religion to the Chinese version of Buddhism. Islam is also embraced by some Dayak tribes. This is because of the marriage with the Malays.

  • Ngayau

The Ngayau tradition is quite an extreme tradition. This tradition is also known as the tradition of hunting the enemy’s head.

Not all Dayak tribes do it. Some of them are the Iban, Ngaju and Kenyah Dayak tribes.

The ngayau tradition was agreed to be discontinued in 1874. At that time, the Dayak Kahayan tribe had a meeting with several other ethnic groups because the Ngayau tradition could cause events.
