To answer users’ curiosity, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri explained the reasons behind the decision in a short video posted on his personal Instagram account with the handle @mosseri. The link sticker provides an opportunity to interact with Stories content. The first reason for replacing the swipe up mechanism to a link sticker, according to Mosseri, is so that users continue to interact with IG Stories that are embedded with a link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mosseri explained, when a link is pinned using the swipe up feature, the user inevitably swipes the screen up to access it, and is then redirected to the site the link is aiming for. With the link sticker, followers can still respond to Instagram Stories uploads by commenting via Direct Message (DM) or reactions in the form of emojis. “(with the sticker link), we want to make sure that you can still have that kind of meaningful interaction from IG Stories,” Mosseri said in a video post on his @mosseri account. Link sticker is more creative and more consistent The second reason for replacing swipe up to link sticker is to give users more control. “These sticker links also give you more creative control over the experience on IG Stories. Mosseri himself revealed that now IG Stories has become the main way for users to share their activities on Instagram, no longer through the main feed line as it used to be. “So the stickers are more consistent with how Instagram works as a whole,” Mosseri says in the video<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sticker link can be used by all Instagram users without a minimum number of followers. In the past, the “swipe up” feature that allows people to link links on Instagram Stories is fairly exclusive because it can only be used by Instagram users with over 10,000 followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because of this minimum number of followers, the “swipe up” feature can usually only be used by influencers, business account users, or verified accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When “swipe up” was changed to a link sticker as of August 30th, the rules were still the same. Only users with more than 10,000 followers can use the link sticker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The good news is, at the end of last October, Instagram decided to make the link sticker feature available and can be used by all Instagram users, without a minimum number of followers anymore. “If we want to be a platform that reduces inequality, then we have to be fair, especially with advanced features like this link sticker,” concluded Mosseri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
