Not so long ago, in a galaxy not too far away\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Once upon a time, there was a boy named Leonardo. He won a competition to go to space!<\/p>\n\n\n\n When he got to space, he put on his space suit and helmet and went outside to float around for a little while. He was tied to his spaceship, so he would not float away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suddenly, he saw an alien on a nearby floating rock. The alien was inside a big glass dome, waving at Leonardo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHi there Earth boy. My name is Ein,\u201d the alien said. \u201cWelcome to space. What\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m Leonardo. I\u2019m the very first kid to visit space. I won a space competition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWow!\u201d said the alien. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you float over to my rock? Just push off gently, one finger only.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leonardo pushed off from his spaceship with one finger. That was all it took to get him heading over toward the alien\u2019s rock. It was so easy to float – so slow, so steady, so gentle!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stopping the air whooshing out<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As he drifted over, he asked the alien: \u201cEin, why do you live in a big glass dome?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSame reason you are wearing a space suit and helmet,\u201d said Ein. \u201cYou need to keep the air in. If you took your helmet off, all the air would whoosh out and you wouldn\u2019t be able to breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leonardo was still drifting closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI could never understand that,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I open my front door at home the air doesn\u2019t whoosh out. What is so different about space?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell, first, do you know what air is made of?\u201d said Ein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYes, it\u2019s made of atoms. They are teeny weeny things, too small to see. Everything is made of atoms,\u201d said Leonardo. He was a very smart boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou know, the atoms in the air you are breathing are moving at the speed of a jet plane,\u201d said Ein. \u201cThey are bouncing all around inside your helmet, and are bouncing off your skin right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s crazy. They would be hurting my skin!\u201d said Leonardo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo. There are so many trillions of them. They are super-tiny. They bounce off,\u201d said Ein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut if you took off your helmet, the air atoms would have nothing to stop them. They would go shooting off at the speed of a jet plane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Air sticks close to planets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Leonardo was confused. \u201cThen why doesn\u2019t all the air shoot off Earth the same way?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe gravity of Earth holds it in,\u201d explained Ein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA rocket – like the one that brought your spaceship to space – can go fast enough to escape Earth\u2019s gravity. But atoms aren\u2019t going that fast, so they stick close to Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leonardo was nearly at Ein\u2019s rock now. \u201cSo air sticks close to all the other big planets, because they have gravity?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ein smiled. \u201cYep,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s got a bit to do with how our universe was created when the\u00a0Big Bang\u00a0happened.
